Nobody has to shrink

A handbook for secure love, exploring neglect, self-worth, emotional independence, and the quantum philosophy of attention and possibility.

Unpublished

What it is

A handbook rather than an argument, built to be used rather than only read.

Nobody has to shrink
A handbook for secure love
2026

Neglect rarely announces itself. It arrives as a question that is never answered, an achievement that receives no acknowledgment, an explanation treated as an excuse, a family spoken about as though it does not matter. One ignored conversation is nothing. A hundred of them become a belief.

The argument is that this is usually not a failure of love but a failure of inner security. Someone who does not feel solid may need another person to be smaller, because the comparison gives temporary relief. So the book turns the mirror both ways. There is a chapter for the person being made small, and a harder one for the person doing it.

The quantum material is a lens for attention, possibility and connection, and the book says so in its own front matter and again in every section that uses it. It shares that discipline with the other manuscript.

Do not make yourself small so someone else can feel big. And do not make someone else small so you can feel big.

The central principle

How it moves

Four blocks. The chapters carry the argument, the quantum sections sit apart from it deliberately, the deep dives settle the objections the chapters raise, and the last third is blank pages with questions on them.

01
The chapters

What neglect is, why diminishing someone can feel good, what it is like to receive it, and the specific territories it occupies: feelings, explanations, work, money, family. Then the way out, ending on inner fullness rather than invulnerability.

01–18
02
Quantum philosophy

Six standalone sections, held separate from the chapters so the register is never ambiguous. Each one states the physics, then states plainly what the metaphor is not allowed to claim.

I–VI
03
Deep dives

Five short pieces that answer the fair objections: that this makes disagreement into neglect, that it licenses needing nobody, that it moves responsibility around unfairly.

Reflection and practice

A working section: inventories, a scripted conversation, a self-worth reset, a commitment, then one question to a page with room to answer it.

The order matters. It runs from naming the pattern, through the places it shows up, to the chapter where the mirror turns toward the reader.

A page from the book

Chapter 10 describes a loop in prose. This is that loop, drawn.

How a fear confirms itself

An old wound supplies the interpretation, the interpretation supplies the behaviour, and the behaviour produces the reaction that appears to prove the wound was right.

THEY IGNORED ME I AM NOT IMPORTANT MAKE THEM PROVE IT DEMANDING THEY WITHDRAW SEE? I AM NOT IMPORTANT ↻ THE CONFIRMATION RETURNS AS THE INTERPRETATION, AND THE LOOP TIGHTENS

The book’s intervention is not at the behaviour but one step earlier. They ignored me is a fact. They do not value me is an interpretation. I have been abandoned is a fear. Separating the three is where choice comes back.

The six quantum sections

They are kept apart from the chapters on purpose, so a reader always knows which register they are in.

I
The observer and attention

Measurement in physics is an interaction, not a glance from outside. The lesson taken across is not that consciousness creates everything, but that observation is participation. In a relationship you are never a neutral observer.

II
Superposition and human possibility

A metaphor for unrealised possibility. A person is not only the version of them you currently see, and repeatedly defining someone as less capable makes you interact with a reduced version of them.

III
Entanglement and relational influence

Not a mystical bond between partners. It is a challenge to the fantasy that my behaviour is my behaviour and has nothing to do with you.

IV
Uncertainty, interpretation and the unknown

You cannot directly observe another person’s inner world. Interpretation becomes dangerous when it hardens into certainty, and the secure move is to leave the sentence at I do not know yet.

V
Decoherence and the collapse of possibility

Contempt, ridicule and dismissal change what feels safe to express. Nothing supernatural has happened. A behavioural environment has narrowed, and a person stops bringing things forward.

VI
Delayed choice, the past and meaning

The past does not move. What later understanding can change is what the experience means, which is a different claim from rewriting history.

What the book claims, and what it does not

Putting quantum mechanics next to love is a phrase with a bad neighbourhood. This is the line the book holds, stated on the copyright page, restated in the introduction, and repeated in every section that uses the physics.

IT CLAIMS
  • That attention has consequences. What is repeatedly attended to gets discussed and developed; what is repeatedly dismissed stops being brought forward.
  • That neglect is a pattern rather than a single missed moment, and that the two should not be confused.
  • That another person’s failure to see your value is evidence about their perception, capacity or state of mind, not automatically about your value.
  • That quantum ideas offer a useful philosophical vocabulary for attention, possibility, uncertainty and connection.
  • That your healing is your own responsibility, and that a partner cannot permanently manufacture your self-esteem.
IT DOES NOT CLAIM
  • That consciousness creates reality. The lesson drawn is that observation is participation, which is a much smaller claim.
  • That two partners are literally entangled. Entanglement is a correlation between physical systems, not a bond between spouses.
  • That psychological narrowing is a literal collapse of a wave function. It is people deciding it is not safe to speak.
  • That delayed-choice experiments show consciousness rewriting the past. What can change is the meaning carried forward.
  • That human relationships obey quantum equations. The science stays science and the metaphor stays metaphor.

The five deep dives

Short pieces that take the obvious objections seriously rather than leaving them to the reader.

The difference between neglect and disagreement
Disagreement says, I see it differently. Neglect says, I do not care enough to understand why it matters to you.
The hidden need beneath attention
The person asking for attention is often asking whether they are safe, or whether they will be chosen. Healthy love makes requests; insecure love sets tests and then judges the failure.
When self-love becomes a wall
After being neglected, deciding you need nobody can look like strength. Emotional independence is not emotional exile.
The responsibility boundary
Your healing is yours and theirs is theirs. Communication, respect and repair belong to both.
The expansion principle
Some environments make people contract and others make them expand. Expansion is not constant praise, it is room.

The workbook

The last third of the book is working pages. These are the named instruments in it.

The neglect inventory
Separates what is being called neglect into lack of attention, respect, agreement or control, and asks which part of the pain belongs to the present.
Where do I make others small
The same inventory turned around. Whose success is uncomfortable, whose explanations get dismissed, where giving is really a bid to be needed.
The secure conversation
Six steps: observable behaviour first, impact without assigning intention, a clear request, room to respond, a question about their experience, one concrete change.
The self-worth reset
A short set of statements separating being overlooked from being worthless, and being criticised from being defective.
The final commitment
Nine lines the reader signs up to, ending on building relationships in which both people are allowed to expand.

Lines from it

Most chapters end on a single line set apart from the prose. Six of them.

You can recognize the wound without becoming the wound.

CH 01 · WHAT NEGLECT REALLY IS

That is how comparison becomes growth instead of cruelty.

CH 06 · TALENT, WORK, AND ACHIEVEMENT

Attention is not everything. But attention is never nothing.

CH 09 · THE QUANTUM LENS

Your spouse should be your partner, not your emotional life-support machine.

CH 10 · OLD WOUNDS

The secure person does not demand perfection. They demand reality.

CH 14 · THE SECURE RESPONSE

You are allowed to take up space. So are they.

A LAST WORD

If any of this is your problem too

The shorter pieces work through the same questions in public, usually before they are resolved. If you want to know when this finds a publisher, or you have an argument with it, say so.
